Identifying Genres For The Anime Reviewer

By Estelle Larsen

The universe of animeshoon has many types that are not usually found in other works. The western side of the globe might have offered you dystopian and post apocalyptic films, but anime has more than just those. Manga has stuck to its very own culture.

Just like in music, you should be able to pick the difference between post hardcore and death metal. With manga, you should also learn how to categorize if you want to be a serious anime reviewer. While everyone can pretty much assume what is classified as romance or action, obscure knowledge of anime can make you confused in terms of labeling the movie or series you are watching.

Mecha movies are derived from the word mechanical and refers to anime that focuses on robots that can be piloted. Mostly they are very huge, or may take a humanoid form. Sometimes they become one giant super robot consisting of much smaller ones, but as long as these machines are pilotable, then they belong to the mecha genre.

Romance has two sub genres while they might sometimes be closer to hentai, the pornographic equivalent in anime, but can be distinguishable. Harem features a male protagonist who is usually shy and awkward and surrounded by archetyped females vying for his affection, while a reverse harem consists of the opposite. Ecchi refers to work that has sexual content but do no go as far as graphic sex, and is usually humorous with the sudden groping and nudity in their scenes.

Cute, barely legal girls can fight crime and evil. But when they do, they usually transform into some kind of a superhero with costumes and makeup and headdresses. It is not all war and violence, though. The magical girl anime genre will still uncover the daily life of the transforming heroine, including her relationships in love and friendship.

Idols are defined as uber talented celebrities. The idol genre focuses on stories about someone with very humble roots who rose to super fame, often accumulating many skills and talents. While they can be considered as slice of life tales, they are specifically centered about winning power or popularity with a ton of fans.

Living things that almost look like very cuddly animals are actually trainable monsters, and they are the central characters of monster battle movies. Card games can become a real life deal between life and death with card battle animations. These are perhaps the most popular and familiar kind, and they are often paired with game merchandise.

Shonen ai refers to manga containing a male homosexual relationship at its core, while shoujo ai is for lesbian relationships. They are not pornographic, but rather romantic. The sexually explicit ones are the yaoi for the male and the yuri for the female.

Like the stereotypes of their characters, manga genres are full of stuff endemic to their very own culture. This makes them more enjoyable and crazier than your daily dose of television. Yet in spite of their seeming insanity, they always manage to have some deep underlying philosophical lessons hiding in the all the action, that is, if you can find them.
